Thinking Activity: Media, Power. and Truly Educated Person

Hello Readers,

This blog is a  part of my classroom thinking activity and it's given by Dr. Dilip Barad Sir.In this blog we have discussed about an interesting topic Power & Media. Now , we are in sem-3 and we are studying Cultural Studies. So as a part of cultural studies we have learnt about  cultural studies Power and Media ;

Cultural Studies :

Cultural studies emerged in Britain in the late 1950s and subsequently spread internationally, notably to the United States and Australia. Originally identified with the Center for Contemporary Cultural Studies at the University of Birmingham and with such scholars as Richard Hoggart, Stuart Hall, and Raymond Williams, cultural studies later became a well-established field in many academic institutions, and it has since had broad influence in sociology, anthropology, historiography, literary criticism, philosophy, and art criticism. Among its central concerns are the place of race or ethnicity, class, and gender in the production of cultural knowledge.Cultural studies, interdisciplinary field concerned with the role of social institutions in the shaping of culture.

When we are discussing about the cultural studies than we should definitely talk about the power and media. Cultural studies is incomplete without the power. Power and Media play a vital role in the culture.

Definition of Power:

Power is the ability of its holder to make other individuals obedient on whatever basis in some social relationship.
In Foucault's theories power is granted through knowledge and therefore constructs truth.

1) your understanding of Power in Cultural Studies (you can write about Michel Foucault's 'Knowledge and Power' also)

In this video we have find that six main sources of civic power ; So let's discuss ,

1)Physical forces:

Physical force is a kind of group and community of people. It means power of police and army.

2) wealth:

Those who have wealth come into leadership. No matter who is in power, there are rich people behind the power. Powerful people are also connected with wealthy people. Power and authority are two sides of the same coin.power is all about the wealth. We suffering from this problem for long time. That people who have a more wealth they are more powerful. They control many people in their power position.

Exa. - Mukesh Ambani cheated other telecome company in the name of digital India with the help of power, broken all rules and regulation of TRAI and made his Jio company.

3)state action:

The government has permission to take action against any incident that occurs in any state. It means state government who decide what to do or not either they elected or dictatorship.

4) Social Norms:Social norms govern the behavior of the members of society:

It means Social norms govern the behavior of the members of society.

5) Ideas:means power generates idea :

It means power generate idea and and suggest to people to do as power like.

6) Number:

It means majority of thinkers who create power by expressing collective intensity of interest.

Three laws of power :

1.Power is never static
2.Power is like water
3.Power compound

What can we do ?

We have two option for understanding power and doing something about it for that we have to understand

* How to read the power ?
* How to write the power ?

2. Why Media Studies is so important in our digital culture?

Discuss the impact of technology on the wider society and culture. I’m going to argue today that even while we know post-truth politics is having a terrible effect on our political culture and our role as citizens, it’s curiously difficult to combat it because of a set of beliefs about what politics is, and about the Internet and the way it enables ordinary people to have a voice. Media is always knowing and gave information about power .

Media plays a very important role in cultural studies. Noam Chomsky has to say about Mass Media. He gives “Five Filters.”

1. Media Ownership
2. Advertising
3. Media Elite
4. Flack
5. The Common Enemy

3) Who can be considered as a 'Truly Educated Person'?

A true education opens a door to human intellectual freedom and creative autonomy. Now we all very well aware about education and it's impact . Education is important for what you are discover and learn ? not  In which position you have stand in class  ?

Truly educated means that people try to come out from their comfort zone and gave their knowledge to other people. If he develops his knowledge and skills in such a way which ultimately results into his positive contribution in community life. Acquiring knowledge and using it for the happiness and goodness of the society really makes a person educated. When your knowledge useful to another person that time you called perfectly educated person.

Thank you...
