Thinking Activity : George Orwell ' s Novel 1984

Hello Friends,

Here, I can described some question - answer from the George Orwell's novel " "1984". In sem-2 we are studying this novel . Dr.Dilip Barad Sir has given this task .Than in this blog I have given my answers .

First of all,  I introduced the novel " 1984" :

ABOUT NOVEL " 1984 " :-

Nineteen Eighty-Four: A Novel, often referred to as 1984, is a dystopian social science fiction novel by the English novelist George Orwell . It was published on 8 June 1949 by Secker & Warburg as Orwell's ninth and final book completed in his lifetime. Thematically, Nineteen Eighty-Four centres on the consequences of totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and repressive regimentation of persons and behaviours within society.Orwell, himself a democratic socialist, modelled the authoritarian government in the novel after Stalinist Russia. More broadly, the novel examines the role of truth and facts within politics and the ways in which they are manipulated.

 1 ) What is dystopian fiction ? Is ' 1984 ' dystopian fiction ?

-: Dystopian fiction worlds :-

whether in novels, films, comic books/graphic novels, or video games — tend to contain many of the same narrative features. Common elements of dystopian fiction include societies engaged in forever wars, and characterized by extreme social and economic class divides, mass poverty, environmental devastation, anarchy, and loss of individuality.

-: 1984 as dystopian fiction :-

George Orwell’s 1984 is a defining example of dystopian fiction in that it envisions a future where society is in decline, totalitarianism has created vast inequities, and innate weaknesses of human nature keep the characters in a state of conflict and unhappiness. Unlike utopian novels, which hold hope for the perfectibility of man and the possibility of a just society, dystopian novels like 1984 imply that the human race will only get worse if man’s lust for power and capacity for cruelty go uncorrected.

Dystopian fiction usually works backward from the present to find an explanation for the fictional society’s decline, and thus to provide a commentary on the reader’s society or a warning of how the future could turn out. In 1984, as Winston works to acquire objects from the past, find spaces without telescreens or microphones in them, and recover memories of the time before the Party, Orwell provides the reader with glimpses of how Winston’s society came to be. We learn about a nuclear war, a revolution, mass famines, and a period of consolidation of power by the Party.
Dystopian novels explore the effects of oppression and totalitarianism on the individual psyche as well as how the individual functions in a repressive society.

In 1984, characters live in fear of wars, government surveillance, and political oppression of free speech.

2 )your learning about the novel from online screening of the film .

The novel 1984 by George Orwell is one of the interesting novel and we also did a screening of this novel. Such things are very clear to understand with help of screening. In this work screening helps to understand such a situation of dystopian society. Movie screening helps us to understand so many things. We can easily understood the situation and some of ideas .Specially whenever we can see movie that time we can easily memorable that movement & that thing.

The movie gave a comprehensive idea of how Big Brother controlled people. If there's one thing I'm worried about in this movie, it's Faridom. Because people were not given any kind of freedom.Big Brother has always kept an eye on the people of his country. If someone does not follow their rules, they punish them. He is tortured in room number 101. The symbols of Nature and World War are depicted together. Man wants to go to Nature but there are some things that hold him back. Everyone follows that person and considers that person special.

3) What according to you is the central theme of this novel?

According to me,  Totalitarianism is one of the major themes of the novel, 1984. It presents the type of government where even the head of the government is unknown to the public. The central focus of the book is to convey the extreme level of control and power possible under a truly totalitarian regime. It explores how such a governmental system would impact society and the people who live in it.

This theme serves as a warning to the people because such regime unleashes propaganda to make people believe in the lies presented by the government. Throughout the novel, there is no proof of Big Brother’s existence in Oceania. The Party exercises complete control not only on the sexual lives of their citizens such as Julia’s and Winston Smith but also on their thoughts, feelings and even writing a diary. The overall monitoring and surveillance of the people through telescreens and subversion of history through the Ministry of Truth are some of the common casualties of such regimes. The third casualty of the totalitarianism is the truth through language. This happens in the shape of mottos such as “War is Peace.” The main Villain of the novel , Big Brother , exists to show the reader what will happen when one single organization or entity controls all information , and every other facet of individual life .

4) What do you understand by the term ' Orwellian ' ?

The works of George Orwell, especially his picture of a future totalitarian state. The word Orwellian is most often used to talk about real-life situations that are reminiscent of this kind of state control and surveillance. Any hint that our government is watching or listening to us as we make phone calls or do Internet searches feels at least a little bit Orwellian.
George Orwell is best known for his 1949 dystopian novel "1984," with its themes of social injustice and a controlling, authoritarian government. Orwell urged us to protect our language because ultimately our ability to think and communicate clearly is what stands between us and a world where war is peace and freedom is slavery.1984  political doublespeak is criticized throughout his work, such as in Politics and the English Language.
